Eosinophilic Enteritis of the Cecum

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis has been considered extremely rare disease, which involved all of the gastrointestinal tract except esophagus. It is characterized by diffuse eosinophilic inf iitration in submucosal layer of gastrointestinal tract, strong history of allergy and peripheral eosinophilia.
The disease is classifiei into two groups, diffuse eosinophilic gastroenteritis and circumscribed eosinophilic infiltrated granuloma. In general, the primary approach of the treatment for eosinophilic gastroenteritis should be conservative with corticosteroid or ACTH. Gastrointestinal obstruction, bleeding and difficulty of differentiation with neoplasms are encountered as surgical problems in some instances.
Recently we experienced a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis of the cecum with presentation of cramping abdominal pain and mass in right lower abdomen. The patient had eosinophilia in the peripheral blood and barium enema revealed cecal mass. This case underwent surgical excision (right hemicolectomy involving cecum).
We are going to present this case with particular interest in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapeutic aspects of the disease.
